Women are central to my practice. I depict them as explorers, navigating both their inner landscapes and the wider world with strength, tenacity and a profound sense of wonder. Each figure embodies the resilience and curiosity which I see as essential to the human spirit.
Born in the UK, Helen’s early career in post-productionopened the door to opportunities in Aotearoa, which she first discovered in1996 and returned to 10 weeks later. Lateron, through finding work in the art industry, and researching others making arttheir career, she made the decision to become a fulltime creative herself.
Always fascinated by figurative work – the mechanics of ourmovements and expression, and what makes each of us unique – Helen developedher work to include her love of the environment, particularly the ocean and its mysterious nature.
Working from herstudio near Lake Rotorua, Helen creates archival-quality canvases. Her work is built in layers. When the ink and acrylic layers have bothdried and cured, she glazes in oils to create depth, and finally varnishes toseal and protect her work.
“My process involves washes of ink, details painted inacrylic, interwoven with fragments of collage containing words and music, representing the rhythms of thought flowing through my head.“
Five words to describe my art: abstract-realism, dreamlike, female-focused, emotional, luminous
