Waiomu forest is one of the jewels of the Coromandel peninsula with one of the finest remaining Kauri stands outside of Waipoua Forest in Northland.  It also has a rich and mature regenerated native forest with many species.

Coromandel native forests contain a wide variety of ferns, mosses and lichens.  The punga tree ferns and epiphytes hanging over the river provide a rich and diverse backdrop to the orange and brown earthy colours of the volcanic sediment in the river.
