Nicolle Aston

The work of acrylic painter Nicolle Aston reflects how she sees life – vibrant and delightful, yet delicate and layered.

Nicolle is deliberate with  her subject matter and enjoys the simplicity of portraying her subject without abstraction or nuance, but she does not attempt absolute realism. “I like to feel free to play with light, shadow and amplified contrast. I deliberately avoid the fine details realism requires and place more emphasis on shape, form, and the bold use of colour. One of the most important elements I am looking for is contrast - where there is contrast , there is drama. I consider what I would like to add, alter or enhance to bring my signature style to the subject.”

Aston’s work is crisp and cheerful. “I apply countless layers of paint for depth, and I favour acrylics. Acrylics have less blending qualities than oils and are more impatient. This helps me to produce a look which merges stylism with realism.”

Nicolle's enjoyment of experimentation brings diversity across her paintings, but her main inspiration stems  from an appreciation of the natural  environment.  She finds nature uplifting. Aston says, “In our busy lives we are surrounded by the mass-produced, the manufactured, the disposables, the digitally enhanced, the devices, and the instantaneous. Nature reminds us to slow down, look around, and notice the splendor.”
