Kokako Companions

This artwork is a pair of gorgeous NZ wattle birds, the kokako. They are often observed in pairs singing their beautiful duets that echo through the high treetops. The reference photos for this artwork were taken by Hannah in a few locations around the North Island. The graceful kokako on the right is ‘Kahurangi’ from Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, which Hannah photographed in June 2019. The beautiful bird on the left was photographed on a visit to Tiritiri Matangi Island in September 2019. This was Hannah’s first time photographing kokako in the wild, and she waited for over 2 hours in a nikau grove before capturing the image. The two birds are perched on a blooming kohekohe branch, which Hannah photographed at the Waikanae river track, which is one of her favourite places to walk on the Kapiti Coast.
